use in COCUSA staff training or devotions
" 3CA is participating with the American Camp Association (ACA) (along with other organizations) in a six-year project funded by Markel Insurance Company that could help camps create healthier environments. The study's second-year findings have just been released. Researchers found that campers and staff were more likely to become ill at camp than to become injured; communicable diseases accounted for 42 percent of camper illness and 41 percent of staff illnesses. According to the ACA, those injuries that did occur were more likely to happen mid-week (Wednesday and Thursday) between noon and 6 p.m. than on other days and during other times. Common injuries included head injuries (29 percent of all day camp injuries, and 20 percent of all resident camp injuries) and finger mishaps among staff caused by knives in food preparation. Some injuries may have been preventable; in resident camps, failure to wear protective equipment was reported in 15 percent of camper and 16 percent of staff injuries."
