Small churches stunt growth with practices
Small Sourthern Baptist churches across the country (with fewer than 100 in worship attendance) are growing slowly compared to their potential because of poor planning, according to a recent Lifeway Research study. In many cases, this is not for lack of trying. Nearly 75 percent of these Southern Baptist pastors study their communities to assess their needs, and 71 percent are involved in their communities. In addition, 90 percent of small-church pastors examine trends in their congregation to help prepare for future growth. But 40 percent of pastors admitted they do not take the time to plan adequately. In addition, executing plans is often difficult for small Southern Baptist churches. Close to half of the pastors involved in the study said that lay leaders of the church trying to protect their area of responsibility often resisted change. LifeWay researchers recommend pastors of these small churches—67 percent of whom are frustrated with a lack of progress—carefully evaluate church ministries, organize to reach their goals, and appropriately plan for the future.
